Custom Battle Mats
As much as I like the readily available neoprene battle mats out there, I have to say, there is something to be said for a handmade 3D Mat. It just feels more realistic to have those small changes in elevation. I guess I'm just a sucker for deeper immersion game play. This mat style can help add just the right amount of mystic and realism to any game play.

Battle Mat Construction
I start by stretching and stapling a heavy poly backed canvas to my work table where I then soak the surface in hot water and then iron the surface to remove any creases. It's then left to dry overnight. Next comes sketching out the mats design. Once laid out, I begin adding layers of EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) foam using contact cement. I make sure not to exceed a height of 3/4 inch for ease of rolling up for storage.
Next I begin skim coating the earthen layer with tinted latex acrylic caulk taking care not to exceed a overall thickness of 3/16 inch. Any more adds considerable weight to the mat. Next comes several layers of latex paints and washes. Then I add thin layers foliage. If the design calls for water elements they a get added using tinted silicone caulk. And finally everything gets thorough coating of acrylic clear mat finish.
